July is National Parks and Recreation Month

In July 2020, the National Recreation and Parks Association will begin to define parks and recreation as an essential necessity and honor the staff. They provide important services and help to make our communities a better place to live, work and play.

The theme “We Are Parks and Recreation,” showcases their selfless work. Join in the celebration throughout the month by sharing your park and recreation story using the hashtag #WeAreParksAndRec

North Carolina has so much to offer. Stunning vistas and recreational activities make the Blue Ridge Parkway one of the most popular destinations in the National Park System. From the Mountains to the Sea: Aquariums, North Carolina Zoo, and Museum of Natural Sciences, the GFWC of North Carolina has participated in these projects for all its citizens.

In 2008, GFWC-NC contributed over $70,000 to the Blue Ridge Parkway Parks classrooms project. The North Carolina Aquarium Society includes aquariums in three locations: Roanoke Island, Fort Fisher, and Pine Knoll Shores. During the 2000-2002 Administration over $100,000 was contributed to their renovation.  The 1996-1998 Administration donated $50,000 to the NC State Museum of National Sciences ‘Mountains to the Sea’ exhibit. GFWC-NC helped fund the original opening of the NC Zoological Park and has continued to support this project.

This is the perfect time of year for inexpensive fun for families. Visit to enjoy the view, hike, cycle and support our National Parks. There is no better or healthier way to enjoy the summer and celebrate GFWC-NC’s history of support for our State and Environment!
