The GFWC Environment Community Service Program encourages us to become stewards of the earth by working to preserve the world’s resources, protect wildlife and domesticated animals, live sustainably, and beautify our communities and enjoy nature.
The Challenge Project of the Environment CSP is: REDUCE PLASTIC USE — REFUSE, REUSE, REPURPOSE, RECYCLE
Support legislation that reduces plastics in the environment. Replace plastic cups, bottles, jugs, bags with reusable
objects such as drinking bottles and cloth shopping bags. Repurpose pill bottles. Make usable objects from plastic
bags, such as crocheted totes and sleeping mats. BE DELIGENT IN RECYCLING OR UPCYCLING, ENSURING EVERY
POSSIBLE ITEM IS PUT TO NEW USE.
How to make an ottoman from plastic bottles
- Select the number of bottles (with caps) needed to make the size ottoman you want
- Tape the bottles together in a circle
- Cut 2 pieces of cardboard in a circle to fit on the top and bottom of the bottles
- Glue the cardboard to the top and bottom of the bottles
- On the top piece of cardboard, glue a circle of batting
- Drape with a piece of fabric large enough to cover the entire piece
- Turn the piece over and glue the fabric to the bottom
- You can staple the fabric to the cardboard for added security
- Voila: an ottoman
AMERICA RECYCLES DAY- November 15- On November 15, millions of people across the United States take part in America Recycles Day. The day raises awareness about recycling and the purchasing of recycled products. How we recycle and reuse products are important.
Even though America Recycles Day is just a day, think of it as a day to start new recycling goals for the upcoming year. Here are some ideas for you to consider for America Recycles Day.
- Avoid plastic bags by bringing your own or declining when possible
- Find or host a recycling event in your area
- Stop throwing away clothing and household textiles. Find a local clothing recycler or contact Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART) to find out where to donate.
- Find out if carton recycling is available in your area.
- Buy recycled when you can
- Talk to your kids about recycling
There are many ways to protect our environment. Some suggestions are:
- Promote water conservation indoor and out
- Support wetland conservation
- Support legislation that protects our National Parks and other protected areas
- Establish a butterfly garden in the community
- Learn about ocean wildlife in peril
- Collect or purchase children’s books about nature and donate them to schools
