GFWC-NC has always had a commitment to education and those wanting to achieve. We continue to support our community by offering scholarships to those in financial need with a strong academic background and a drive to succeed. These past months have been challenging because of COVID-19, but our commitment is still strong. We would like to update all of our clubwomen on what has been happening within the following scholarships:
Greeson-Johnson Teaching Scholarship
As a reminder, the Greeson-Johnson Teaching Scholarship has been suspended for 2021. However, the policies and procedures for this scholarship are currently being revamped, and we are hopeful that we will be able to bring everyone updated information for this scholarship prior to the GFWC-NC Convention next April. For questions, please contact Andie Johnson, chairman of the Greeson-Johnson Teaching Scholarship.
Lucy Bramlette Patterson Award
Clubs are always encouraged to nominate writers for the Lucy Bramlette Patterson award. The committee seeks to select North Carolina female authors who would have wide appeal to our members. In the past, there have been questions about why the deadline for nominations is almost a year before the convention. Successful authors have busy schedules with book tours and speaking engagements, so it takes extensive planning to be put on the calendar of an author who is in demand. The committee has already been working on an author for 2021. For more information, please contact Jessica Rigouard, the Lucy Bramlette Patterson chairman.
Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship
Sallie Southall Cotten was a principal leader in the organization of the North Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1902. The Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship was started to honor her legacy. You can learn more about the scholarship here: https://gfwcnc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/SSCS_2020-2022.pdf
The GFWC-NC Executive Committee and Board of Trustees recently voted to temporarily amend the rules for the Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship for the 2020-2021 school year to make SAT and/or ACT scores optional items to be submitted with students’ applications. We urge local clubs to update their local application process to accommodate students who have been unable to access standardized testing due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The deadline for all packets to be received by the GFWC-NC (from each district) is March 1, 2021. Packets should be mailed to:

Interviews will take place on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum. It is possible that interviews may be held virtually depending on what – if any – COVID restrictions exist at that time.
